Na refractiechirurgie zoals LASIK, LASEK, en PRK onstaan soms dubbelcontouren, in het Engels noemt men dit "shadows" of "ghosts" De medische term is "mono-oculare diplopie”.

Sommigen zien slechts één enkel extra beeld, terwijl anderen er ontelbaar veel zien.

De spookbeelden van de een zijn vrij transparant, terwijl die van de ander zo ondoorzichtig zijn dat het onmogelijk wordt om te onderscheiden welke het spook is en welke "echt beeld."

Wanneer de meeste mensen aan dubbelzien denken, denken zij aan gekruiste ogen. Maar de slachtoffers van refractiechirurgie hebben vaak een dubbelbeeld met één enkel oog.

Dit wordt veroorzaakt door onregelmatig astigmatisme, heuvels en valleien in het hoornvlies. Dit buigt het licht in vreemde richtingen, resulterend in veelvoudige beelden op de retina.

Het verschil tussen dubbelzien en ghosting is een kwestie van gradatie: Bij dubbelzien is secundaire beeld ondoorzichtiger, terwijl bij ghosting het secundaire beeld juist doorzichtiger is (vandaar de naam).
