What is eSight?

eSight is an amazing technological breakthrough – electronic glasses that let the legally blind actually see.  

eSight is a unique wearable medical device that enhances the functional vision of a person who has low vision or is legally blind. Most importantly, eSight requires no surgery. eSight is registered with the United States FDA and with Health Canada.

Does eSight actually work?

It really does. There are thousands of videos and media articles on social media and eSight’s website
that feature legally blind people who can now see thanks to eSight. A major clinical trial showing eSight’s efficacy has been completed and the data will be published in 2017. eSight is truly a game changer for people with low vision.

What is eSight’s guiding principle?

eSight fundamentally believes that Everyone Deserves to See! We believe this to be true no matter someone’s age, walk of life, cause of vision loss, or ability to pay. This is especially true now that a technology like eSight exists that enables the legally blind to actually see.

How did eSight come to be?

eSight’s founder, a successful electrical engineer, has two sisters who are legally blind. In 2006, he said to himself, “If I can assemble teams of engineers who can build incredible products for the commercial market, why not assemble an engineering team that can build electronic glasses that would let my sisters see?”

The eSight engineers had a unique vision for a totally new and revolutionary type of solution they wanted to build. For eSight to be truly useful for the legally blind, the technology would have to:

■ Be a comfortable, wearable and hands-free device, allowing legally blind individuals to use both of their hands while they use eSight to see.

■ Be able to replicate the way sighted people see by “instantaneously” auto-focusing between

short-range vision (reading a book or text on a smartphone) to mid-range vision (seeing faces or watching TV) to long-range vision (looking down a hallway or outside a window), without any perceptible lag time.

■ Be a sophisticated, comprehensive medical device that could replace all the many single-task assistive devices that are currently available but do not provide actual sight (e.g. white canes, magnifying devices, service animals, Braille machines, CCTV scanners, text-to-speech software, etc.).

■ Provide true mobility so that a legally blind individual could use eSight, not just to see while sitting down but be independently mobile (e.g. walking, exercising, commuting to work or school, taking a plane, playing golf, etc.).

■ Enable legally blind individuals to independently carry out virtually all Activities of Daily Living (ADLs).

It took many years of hard work, investments of tens of millions of dollars, several patented innovations and much trial-and-error working with many legally blind individuals, but, the end result was eSight: electronic glasses that enable the legally blind to actually see. Today, eSight is proud to be the largest, most knowledgeable and best-funded R&D lab in the world dedicated to non-surgical sight restoration for the visually impaired. Our record of technological achievements and the breadth of our patents in the area are second to none.

How does eSight work?

■  A high-speed, high resolution camera in the middle of the eSight electronic glasses captures what a user is looking at in real time.

■  eSight’s powerful computer instantly processes the high definition video and displays it on two OLED screens in front of the user’s eyes using cutting edge optics.

■  eSight’s proprietary algorithms enhance the video feed.

■  Full color video images can be clearly seen by the eSight user with unprecedented visual clarity and no perceptible latency or delay.

■  With eSight’s patented Bioptic Tilt capability, users can adjust the eyewear to the precise position that, for them, presents the best view of the video while maximizing outer peripheral vision (which is often still functional for people with low vision). This, along with imperceptible short latency, ensures that a user’s balance is not disturbed and, hence, no nausea occurs– common problems with immersive technologies such as virtual reality headsets. Perhaps more importantly, it is the Bioptic Tilt that allows eSight users to be mobile while using the device.

■  eSight users can easily control color, contrast, focus, brightness and magnification (24X) using a sleek controller and intuitive user interface.

■  eSight users can take photos, and stream video and games utilizing eSight’s Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and

HDMI capabilities.

Who does eSight work for?

According to the World Health Organization, there are approximately 300 million people in the world

who are blind.

Less than 15% of this population are profoundly or totally blind. Unfortunately, eSight cannot currently help this population.

Over 85% of the world’s 300 million blind people are legally blind or have low vision, and eSight works for most of this larger blind population. This includes blind individuals with the following conditions:

■      Macular Degeneration

■      Diabetic Retinopathy

■      Stargardt Disease

■      Ocular Albinism

■      Optic Nerve Hypoplasia

■      Optic Atrophy

■      Leber’s Hereditary Optic Neuropathy

■      Some forms of Retinitis Pigmentosa (RP)

■      And many others, as eSight continues to research and develop new

        technologies that address different conditions.

What can I do with eSight?

eSight enables people with vision loss to actually see. What they do with their newly restored sight is up to them. This extends to  virtually all independent Activities Daily Living (ADLs) including:

■      Seeing the faces of loved ones, in some cases for the first time

■      Going to school or university

■      Using a computer or smartphone

■      Watching TV

■      Reading

■      Travelling independently

■      Working in an office

■      Working in a factory

■      Viewing sporting and cultural events

■      Arts and crafts

■      Cooking

■      Walking

■      Playing sports

■      Resuming previously abandoned hobbies (cards, woodworking, etc.)

■      Flying a plane (yes, we actually have one such example)

■      And so much more

What clinical evidence exists to prove that eSight really works?

As defined by the FDA and Health Canada, eSight is a Class I medical device. It provides enhanced vision without requiring surgery, pharmaceuticals, or other invasive means.

A past study overseen by the CNIB demonstrated that eSight offers a statistically significant improvement in visual acuity and contrast sensitivity for users.

eSight is currently the subject of a major new clinical trial, that includes the participation of many of North America's leading institutions for the study of eye disease, including:

■      Bascom Palmer Eye Institute at the University of Miami

■      Johns Hopkins University Wilmer Eye Center

■      Kellogg Eye Center at the University of Michigan

■      ‍The Center for Retina and Macular Disease

■      Toronto Western Hospital of University Health Network

■      Université of Montréal

This study is expected to further validate the ways in which eSight can substantially improve the quality of life and independent Activities of Daily Living (ADLs) for individuals with visual impairment. The data from this trial is expected to be published in 2017.
